This is Mabel and at 84 years old, she just got married for the 4th time. This time it was to a mortician. The local newspaper which carried the story was so intrigued by her life’s story that they did a more complete interview with her. It turned out that when she was in her 20’s she married her first husband who was a banker. Then an aspiring actor when she was in her 40’s. In her 60’s her third husband was a preacher before she married the mortician.
The interviewer looked at her, quite astonished, and asked why she had married four men with such diverse careers.
“Easy, son,” she smiled.
“I married one for the money…two for the show…three to get ready…and four to go!”
Well there are a lot of different ways to open up a new series but what I liked about Mabel’s personal story is that it recognizes a universal truth. All of us go through passages in life. I am speaking about the passage of life from the womb to the tomb and everyone that falls in between.
How faithfully you live through these passages can:
- further your growth so that every day feels like a new adventure
- it can also create deeply fulfilling relationships
- it can make peace with your past, no matter how difficult
- raise our children to be fulfilled, productive adults
If it all is done well you can leave this earth with a sense of “No regret”.
The future of Community Bible Church rests in the growth and vitality of its four adult generations. In this series using Psalm 145:4 as our theme, we will learn how a church can assist all of our generations to reach their God given potential
One generation shall commend your works to another, and shall declare your mighty acts. (Psalm 145:4 ESV)
